Reduction and Augmentation Mammoplasty
Breasts can be greatly improved by decreasing or increasing the volume and by remodeling a drooping shape. AfterHeavy breasts require reduction mammoplasty. Puberty would be the ideal time for this operation since the early intervention will avoid spinal cord deformities and also an inferiority complex and other feelings that may affect the sexual behavior and self-esteem of the adolescent patient. Small breasts are augmented by implanting through a small incision a silicone prosthesis filled with silicone gel or other substances. Drooping breasts are corrected by removal of skin excess, anchoring the gland in a way that there is no contact between breast and thorax skin, as in the case of many adolescent patients.
Breast surgery always leaves apparent scars. It cannot be performed otherwise. This issue should be discussed in depth between the surgeon and the patient who will decide if the exchange of a large and unaesthetic breast with no scars for a graceful one with scars is a valid choice. Before When deciding to operate, the patient must be well aware that a further procedure may be necessary to minimize the scars and also for an eventful treatment associated to radiation.
It should be underlined that the approximately 4 cm scar is really quite small in augmentation mammoplasties, almost undetectable, as the incision is placed next to the areola or in the sulcus under the breast. It can be under local anesthesia with sedation, by epidural or by general anesthesia, whichever is decided between doctor and patient.
